Course Aims

During the week you will focus on developing the following key areas of your acoustic guitar playing: Improve your rhythm strumming technique, expand your chord vocabulary, experiment with a variety of tempos, boogies, shuffles and swing rhythms and work on building a knowledge and understanding of common chord progressions. Build your confidence by playing with other guitarists and learn how to develop ideas and express yourself during the improvised jam sessions.

Course Structure

The course will consist of four hours tuition per day, broken into three daily sessions. You will also receive a 30-minute one-to-one guitar lesson with Richard. Expect to learn the acoustic blues styles of Eric Clapton and Robert Johnson through to acoustic strummers such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the modern fingerpickers Jose Gonzalez and Newton Faulkner, exploring some wonderful open tunings along the way.

Teaching Methods

You will be encouraged to work together in small groups and classes will be arranged to support various areas of development and interest. It is not a formal requirement to be able to read music to attend this course. The supporting course handouts will use a mixture of tablature (with standard notation) and chord/scale diagrams with slash charts. All classes will be taught in a relaxed and supportive environment with practical demonstrations throughout.
